Rector's Greeting
Distinguished guests, partners, dear colleagues, and most importantly, our students,
I wish you all a happy new academic year. It is my great honor to welcome you all to the opening of the new academic year at the German-Mongolian Institute for Resources and Technology.
In this academic Year 129 freshmen and over 50 BEP students newly enrolled. 36 percent of our newly enrolled students from the provinces, 31 percent are female.
Looking back, the previous year was officially declared the Year of Quality. And indeed, it truly was. All our degree programs successfully achieved international accreditation, while our institution also began the process of national accreditation—a milestone that will further strengthen our role within Mongolia’s higher education landscape. These achievements are the result of the dedication of our staff, the commitment of our students, and the strong support of our partners.
GMIT also had the privilege of organizing the 3rd International Conference on Resources and Technology, which brought together over 150 researchers and engineers from 13 countries. This conference not only highlighted cutting-edge research but also confirmed GMIT’s role as a hub for scientific exchange, collaboration, and innovation at the intersection of mining, technology, and sustainable development.
Now, as we open this new academic year, we look ahead with excitement to several important developments:
• Our new multipurpose laboratory building, an extension of our campus, will soon be ready. Equipped with advanced laboratories and modern teaching spaces, it will provide our students and researchers with an environment where knowledge and innovation can flourish. It will also serve as a strong foundation for the successful pre-accreditation and official launch of our newly developed PhD program.
• We are especially grateful to Oyu Tolgoi LLC for their generous contribution of the Mineral Liberation Analyzer (MLA)—one of the most essential equipment in modern mineralogy. With this equipment, our students and faculty will be able to carry out world-class research right here on our campus.
• This year, 12 faculty research projects will be funded through the SRDF, with the financial support of GIZ and private companies. These projects will not only advance knowledge but will also actively involve our students, offering them valuable hands-on experience in applied science and engineering.
Our commitment to internationalization also remains strong. Together with our German partner universities—TU Bergakademie Freiberg, RWTH Aachen, HSZG, and other national and international partners—we continue to collaborate in teaching, research, and curriculum development, as well as by hosting visiting professors, facilitating faculty and student exchanges, and organizing summer schools. With the support of DAAD, seven of our students will study in TUBA Freiberg, Germany this year with TNB scholarships, 24 students will benefit from Sur-Place scholarships from DAAD, and GMIT itself will provide scholarships to 16 students. These opportunities ensure that our students gain access to world-class learning experiences, while also ensuring that financial barriers will not stand in the way of academic excellence.
At the national level, the Government of Mongolia has declared this year the Year of Education. In alignment with this vision, GMIT will dedicate 2025–2026 as the Year of Research and Development. This focus will strengthen the vital link between education, research, innovation, and industrial progress in Mongolia.
Dear students, this year will bring many opportunities—but also challenges. University life is not only about learning facts. It is about developing the ability to think critically, to solve problems creatively, and to act responsibly. You will have the chance to participate in research projects, to learn from international faculty, and to join exchange programs abroad. I encourage you to embrace these opportunities, to be active, and to engage with curiosity and passion.
As Albert Einstein once said: “Education is not the learning of facts, but the training of the mind to think.” May these words guide you in your studies and in your journey at GMIT.
In closing, let me express my gratitude:
• to our two Governments /MED, BMZ/GIZ, KfW, DAAD for their continued support,
• to our faculty and staff for their tireless dedication,
• to our partners for their trust and collaboration,
• and to our students, who are the heart of this university and the reason for everything we do.
I want to express my sincere thanks to the working group organizing this opening ceremony successfully.
I wish you every success in your studies, your research, and your personal growth. Together, let us make 2025–2026 a remarkable year for GMIT.
Thank you.
