STRENGTHENING POLICY DIALOGUE AND RESEARCH COLLABORATION IN MONGOLIA’S CRITICAL MINERALS SECTOR

Ulaanbaatar, Mongolia | 14 October 2026

The German-Mongolian Institute for Resources and Technology (GMIT), in collaboration with the Deutsche Gesellschaft für Internationale Zusammenarbeit (GIZ), the Mongolian Critical Minerals Association, the School of Law of the National University of Mongolia, and the School of Geology and Mining of the Mongolian University of Science and Technology, is organizing the international roundtable conference and collaborative workshop “Critical Minerals – Opportunities and Challenges” on 14–15 October 2026.

As critical minerals become increasingly important to the energy transition, advanced technologies, industrial development, and strategic global supply chains, aligning policy, research, and innovation is essential to translating Mongolia’s mineral resources into sustainable economic opportunities and long-term partnerships.

The two-day event brings together representatives from government, industry, universities, research institutions, and international organizations to exchange perspectives on Mongolia’s critical minerals policies and strategies, international market opportunities, and prospects for research and innovation cooperation.

The first day’s roundtable conference addresses Mongolia’s foreign policy on critical minerals, strategic resource management, European perspectives, opportunities and standards for rare earth elements from Mongolia to Germany, and diagnostic approaches for the critical minerals industry. A panel discussion will further explore how Mongolia can move from mineral resources towards strategic value chains.

The second day’s collaborative workshop will focus on developing the concept note for the Mongolian Critical Minerals Research and Innovation Hub (R&I Hub). Drawing on experiences from Germany, Mongolia, and other countries, participants will discuss university–industry cooperation and opportunities to strengthen research partnerships, innovation, and cross-sector collaboration.

Beyond policy dialogue, the initiative aims to lay the groundwork for practical cooperation among government, industry, academia, research institutions, and international partners. By advancing the concept of a national research and innovation hub, the event seeks to support future collaborative research initiatives and contribute to the sustainable development of Mongolia’s critical minerals sector.
