DR. ANDREAS HANDSCHUH AND DELEGATION PAY OFFICIAL VISIT TO GMIT

A delegation headed by Dr. Andreas Handschuh, Head of the State Chancellery and State Secretary for Federal and European Affairs of the Free State of Saxony, paid an official visit to the German-Mongolian Institute for Resources and Technology (GMIT) on September 8, 2026.
During the visit, representatives of the Saxon State Government and Saxon universities and higher education institutions met with the leadership, professors, and faculty members of GMIT to exchange views on strengthening cooperation in education, science, and research. The visit opened with welcoming remarks by Prof. B. Battsengel, Rector of GMIT, followed by a guest address by Dr. Andreas Handschuh.
As part of the visit, a ceremony was held to award DAAD TNB and Sur-Place scholarships to GMIT students. This year, 35 students received the Sur-Place Scholarship, while 7 Bachelor’s and 1 Master’s student were awarded the TNB Scholarship. Prof. Dr. Carsten Drebenstedt, Professor and Head of Research at TU Bergakademie Freiberg, attended the ceremony and congratulated the scholarship recipients, wishing them continued success in their academic and research pursuits.
The delegation then toured GMIT’s teaching and research facilities, including the Energy and Electrical Engineering Laboratory, Processing Laboratory, Library, Physics Laboratory, Chemistry Laboratory, and Advanced Mineral Characterization Laboratory. The delegation also visited GMIT’s minerals collection and viewed the architectural model of the GMIT campus.
An open discussion was held as part of the visit, focusing on the cooperation initiatives between GMIT and Saxon universities and higher education institutions implemented to date, opportunities for further cooperation, and the “1,000 Engineers Program.” The discussion brought together representatives of the Saxon State Government and Saxon State Parliament, as well as senior representatives from Zittau/Görlitz University of Applied Sciences (HSZG), TU Bergakademie Freiberg, and HTW Dresden.
During the visit, GMIT also strengthened its cooperation with higher education institutions in Saxony by signing a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) with Zittau/Görlitz University of Applied Sciences (HSZG) and and Agreement of Cooperation with HTW Dresden. These agreements provide a foundation for further cooperation in education, research, academic exchange, and engineering education.
The official visit of the delegation led by Dr. Andreas Handschuh concluded with a group photo, marking another important step toward strengthening cooperation between Mongolia and the Free State of Saxony in education, science, and engineering, while creating new opportunities for future collaboration.
