UNR Delegation Visits GMIT to Explore Opportunities for Cooperation
On September 10, 2026, a delegation from the University of Nevada, Reno (UNR) visited the German-Mongolian Institute for Resources and Technology (GMIT) for an informal introductory meeting to discuss potential areas of cooperation between the two institutions.
The meeting was attended by Prof. B. Battsengel, Rector of GMIT, and Prof. Dr. Ch. Enkhzaya, Vice Rector for Academic Affairs at GMIT, who introduced GMIT’s educational, research, and international cooperation activities.
The UNR delegation was led by Brian Sandoval, President of the University of Nevada, Reno and the 17th Governor of the State of Nevada, and included Michael Flores, Vice President for Government Relations and Community Engagement; Dr. Sudeep Chandra, Director of the Tahoe Institute for Global Sustainability; Dr. Mehmet Tosun, Chief International Officer and Director of the Ozmen Center for Entrepreneurship and International Business Programs; Dr. Scott Basset, Associate Dean of the Mackay School of Science and Engineering; and Chris Crookshanks, University Champion and Director of the Nevada Department of Wildlife’s Fisheries Program.
During the meeting, the two sides exchanged views on potential cooperation in mining, sustainability, innovation, entrepreneurship, student and faculty mobility, short-term programs, internships, joint training, and applied research.
The participants also discussed opportunities to strengthen cooperation with small and medium-sized enterprises in the mining sector, as well as the development of joint research and innovation projects and collaboration connecting universities, industry, and government stakeholders.
Dr. Sudeep Chandra, the main contact point for the UNR delegation, has extensive experience in Mongolia and has visited the country more than 100 times. His experience in international cooperation and student exchange programs provides a valuable foundation for identifying practical and mutually beneficial opportunities for collaboration between UNR and GMIT.
The meeting marked an important step toward developing long-term cooperation between UNR and GMIT in mining, sustainability, student and faculty exchange, innovation, entrepreneurship, and joint projects.
